Shane Neilsen

Shane Neilsen is the author of AFTER SURVIVAL: A Memoir of Choice, Consequence, and the Life That Followed, published in September 2026. His writing draws on a life shaped by serious injury, the murder of his younger sister, and the years spent learning how to live with what those experiences left behind. At ten years old, Shane survived a catastrophic brain injury that doctors didn’t expect him to live through. Four years later, a motorcycle accident caused another serious brain injury and permanent hearing loss in his left ear. Recovery brought years of surgeries, exhaustion, adjustment, and reliance on the people who cared for him. The murder of his sister, Michelle, brought a different kind of loss. She was his only sibling, and her death changed the lives of their parents, her husband, and everyone who loved her. Shane writes candidly about the anger that followed, the difficulty of remembering her apart from the violence of her death, and the gradual role of faith and forgiveness in finding peace. His work explores how people carry loss into ordinary life, how families care for one another, and how moving forward can include a continuing love for someone who has died. He approaches these subjects through personal experience and the perspective that comes from looking back over decades. Through his writing, Shane hopes to offer readers a sense of companionship and room to consider their own experiences. He remains especially grateful for the people whose patience, kindness, and steady presence helped him through seasons he couldn’t manage alone. A husband, father, and grandfather, Shane lives in Panaca, Nevada, with his wife, Randi. Together, they own Neilsen Storyworks, LLC, which published AFTER SURVIVAL.
